Nominations closed today at noon across New Zealand for the upcoming local government elections. The exciting news is there are five people standing for mayor of Lower Hutt, including the two-term incumbent Ray Wallace. It’s always good for democracy to have an election for key positions, so while I’m sure Ray will be re-elected – it’s good for the system that he is challenged.

Hutt City Council is split into 6 wards or regions – people within these areas cast one vote for their favourite candidate. The two people with the most votes represent that community at council. So if you’re good at maths that leaves 12 councillors around the council table, with one elected mayor. One of the 12 candidates is also chosen by the mayor to be his deputy mayor.

In this article on The Dominion Post it outlines a proposed ban on pokie machines inside Hutt City Council buildings. This is in relation to the new $6.2 million council-owned bowling hub that is currently being built in Naenae. The Gaming Trust who manage the pokies, have funded over $1m towards the project, and the hub is relying on the pokies for 25 per cent of it’s income.
