I don’t know about you, but I glanced at the calendar this week and just about fell off my chair. December is knocking, the pohutukawa are starting to bloom, and slowly but surely, that festive panic is setting in… what do I buy, and who do I still need to buy for?
Before you fill your online cart with things from half a world away, I want to offer up a gentle challenge: shop local this Christmas.
When you buy from a local business, that money doesn’t vanish into the internet, it stays right here in our community. It helps keep the lights on for someone who’s been treading water since COVID, it flows through to local suppliers and producers, and it even trickles into the sausage sizzles and raffles that keep our clubs and teams going.
And it doesn’t have to be “stuff”! Vouchers for local cafes, hairdressers, massage therapists, or beauty spots are a brilliant gift (especially for the person who’s impossible to buy for). They’re clutter-free, useful, and bring a bit of joy without the waste.
So here it is—my unofficial guide to awesome local Lower Hutt businesses you can support this Christmas. This list is by no means complete (apologies in advance if I missed your fave), but it’s a starting point to get you thinking local. Let’s keep the Christmas spirit in our community.
What’s missing from the list? Where are your favourite spots to spoil friends and family?
