Small topless crates aren’t sufficient in size or protection from the elements. If elected, one of the first things I’ll be working towards is a revamped recycling system. A two-bin system is in place in other cities around the region and works far better than our current crate system. For the average size family, the crate isn’t big enough to recycle everything that can be recycled. Once it is full, the wind & rain cause some of the items to be blown around the streets into our stormwater system. Closed bins provide protection from the elements, more space for recycling, and easier to move for those less able (as they have wheels)

We also need to look at new designs for our rubbish bits. They are not suitable for our windy conditions (especially along the harbour’s edge) or seagulls having mealtime and leaving rubbish all over the ground. Lots of other cities have Big Belly Bins, which are the equivalent of 8 rubbish bins. Using solar power to compress the rubbish and send real-time data to a central location so they can be emptied when they need to be.
